Why Buttersville?

We occasionally have folks ask us how this great spot got the name Buttersville.  Here's the short version of the story: Back when the Township was first developing in the mid- to late 1800's, Marshall Butters was one of the early businessmen in the area.  He managed the lumbermills in a small village that came to be called....  yep, you guessed it: "Buttersville."  It was one of four settlements on the peninsula.  The others were Seatonville, Taylorsville, and Finn Town.

Buttersville had the local area's first post office.  It also had a general store, a church, a drug store, a two-room school house, and a boarding house -- serving up to 1,000 residents and workers who came to the mills.  Mr. Butters was a highly regarded business man described as "deservedly popular throughout the community and ... recognized as one of the most reliable businessmen of the northwest."
